Nice columns out in front! Not typical cookie cutter Witness architecture to be sure. Almost 3 million for a conveniently located building in a seemingly historic district in Indy though. Makes perfect sense for them to unload it. I'm surprised they haven't already done so. There are plenty of industrially zoned lots in outlying prairie towns that will do the trick even better. It's too nice of a building for the BS that goes on inside.

I guess it goes to show how mentally conditioned Witnesses are if they buy the entire "Jehovah's simplifying things, so these branches are closing". I try to look at it from an economic and political standpoint. If IKEA had but one store in NZ and they decided to shut it down, it means that the place was bleeding money. If a country closes an embassy or consulate, they are either cutting costs or they don't have much of a reason to have an office there. I'm still very curious as to why they would close up shop in such an important country like NZ. It's not like shuttiing down the Luxembourg office to run it out of France.

I think that historically the WTS has placed branches in places for 'exotic' appeal rather than logical reasons. Why else would they maintain branches in Alaska and Hawaii for all of those years instead of just running them out of Brooklyn? They wanted to paint an idealistic picture for Witnesses that the message was being preached to Eskimos on the tundra and to natives in hula skirts in some tropical locale. Today they still have branches in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, both lands of roughly 50,000 people. Why? They could be easily run out of Denmark, since both lands are a part of Denmark and Danish is a common language to all three lands. Instead they close a branch in a land of over 4 million people. Maybe they'll consolidate the Faroe Islands and Greenland branches into the Danish branch. Or maybe they'll justify it due to the differences in the Faroese and Greenlandic languages. Who knows what they're thinking over in Brooklyn and Patterson? For whatever reason, they decided the NZ branch was suddenly expendable. If Lloyd Barry were still around, the NZ branch would have never been shuttered.

1954 Fred Franz court statement:"God does not deal in Temples made with hands."
by kepler inwriting on a topic and writing an essay: are they the same thing?
i suspect that ranging too wide on a topic is an error to avoid in this medium.. earlier, while examining issues drawing from genesis, hebrews and court testimony of frederick franz in scotland in 1954, i came across a statement that only very slowly sank in.
as background on the jehovah's witnesses for the walsh petition case for exemption from government service, it was stated in the strachan vs. walsh testimony that the line of witnesses was unbroken from the time of abel.

Freddy was obviously annoyed with the line of questioning, and wasn't used to having to defend his viewpoints in such strong terms. The Walsh case as far as I know was an attempt to qualify JWs in the UK as ministers, thus exempting them for national service and conscription. The government was trying to paint them as a relatively recent sect with little history behind it, and Franz was trying to reason that Russell and his successors were an extension of the true religion starting with Abel. He backed himself into a corner and had to connect the dots with Abel, Moses, King David, Jesus, the apostles, and the modern JW organization. It's no surprise Franz came up with some curious comments.

Not a cent for NZ, that's for sure. If they want to build a KH or AH, they can raise the funds themselves and get a WT loan with interest.

And to think I actually preferred to read about tangerines and thimbles in Awake! rather then suffer through the dogmatism of the Watchtower. There was this useful article about calligraphy which started me on that hobby. They would actually do themselves some good by re-tooling Awake! as some sort of "current events" publication, of course with a Witness slant to everything. What does the WT think about the revolt in Syria? I'd read it just for kicks.

Please share... All I ever heard was that Rutherford was a supporter of William Jennings Bryan. Did he support anyone after that (i.e Woodrow Wilson or FDR)?

The best vocalist in The Band and its spiritual center. He also played guitar and mandolin, in addition to drumming. He was pretty broken up about the 1976 break-up and it took him years to recover. But it had a happy ending and he died as the most prolific solo artist to come out of The Band. I wish I lived in NY. I certainly would have come to one of his Midnight Rambles. Sad news indeed for rock music.

I like the idea of a biography on Russell. They should make it Volume I as part of a trilogy, with Volume II about Rutherford, and Volume III about Knorr/Franz. As for whether or not Barbara should write a book, it's not something which should be taken lightly and it can take years to write and research. The only opinion that should matter is hers regarding whether or not she should write a book. I'm sure it would be well-received here if she does.
